When a place, particularly a business, claims to be wheelchair accessible, a lot of times it really isn’t – it is only accessible to the minimal required standards. So many places I have gone to that say they are fully accessible have merely an automatic door opening button, and a support bar next to the toilet. Sure, that may be fine for people who are able to use their arms well and able to transfer themselves, but what about the more severely disabled that require much more assistance? I, personally, am completely dependent and need to use a lift to transfer, and you would be surprised how difficult it is to find a hotel room with a bed that has a space underneath to allow for a Hoyer lift to slide under.

Society needs to think more about the disabled community and cater to their needs a little more, instead of only making places as minimally accessible as the law states. How often do you, as a wheelchair-bound person or someone accompanying one, go to a shop only to find that you can’t even get in because the aisles are too narrow? People often don’t think about these kinds of things, and it’s a shame that we have to miss out on so much because of the fact that we are an often forgotten minority.

The best thing to do would be to have some people that are in wheelchairs on the council when the city is discussing making a place accessible, that way they can get ideas from the ones that know what is required or what would be ideal, then they can ensure that the physically disabled can be included and partake in more activities that able-bodied people can. The next time you encounter somewhere that cannot accommodate you, write a quick letter, phone call, e-mail, etc… to your mayor to suggest ways of making changes to resolve the issue. If enough people do this, the city may better consider our special needs and make the necessary alterations – together we can make a difference!

Wheelchair In Motion is the first short term rental company of accessible vehicles, to offer the NEW MV-1 as a choice of vehicles available in our fleet for rent.
The MV-1 is the first Full Production accessible vehicle. “Universally designed from the ground up for accessibility,”(from MV-1canada)

With the addition of the MV-1 to our fleet, there is now an opportunity to try out this accessible vehicle to see if this is the right choice for you and your family before you purchase.
The purchase of an accessible vehicle is a major decision and a very important one, and you must be comfortable with your choice as well as being a good fit into your daily living. This is not a decision that you can always make quickly and a lot of research is often needed.
Having the MV-1 in our fleet also allows for the commercial market such as group homes, health care facilities, taxis, etc to test the MV-1 in their own fleet of accessible vehicles.
We would love to hear from other owners of the MV-1, and those that have rented the MV-1, as to how they like the MV-1.
If you would like to try the MV-1 give us a call at 1-888-776-1102 or visit our web site.
Thank you for taking the time to visit Wheelchair In Motion,

Canadian Tire Includes the Canadian Paralympic Committee in its Partnership Agreement

Canadian Tire has for many years played a major role in sports fundraising, particularly with their charity program, “Jump Start|”, that helps under privileged children acquire the necessary equipment that their families cannot afford, as well as assistance with the travel costs and fees associated with sports, so that they may also be given the opportunity to play, and as of Jan. 23, 2013 they have signed an eight-year agreement as a Premier National Partner of the Canadian Olympic Team that includes the Canadian Paralympic Committee, which altogether represents the largest commitment of its kind to amateur sports in Canada. This is a momentous occasion for people with disabilities that are interested in or active in playing sports, as well as for the disabled community in general; the consideration and inclusion of persons with disabilities in areas of life that would normally not be ”disabled friendly” is always something to celebrate. As times change and businesses, as well as society as a whole is being encouraged to broaden the horizon for those who previously did not have the opportunity to participate in the majority of what is available to able-bodied people, more options and alternatives are becoming available so that they may be included in the activity. It is important as a society to develop and mature so that equality can be a general mindset, and having the Paralympic Committee endorsed by a major corporation like Canadian Tire not only helps legitimize disabled sports in the eyes of the country, perhaps even globally, but it also encourages the needs of the disabled community to be recognized as a serious matter, and their wants to be considered and met. A thumbs-up and appreciative thank you to Canadian Tire for taking a big step in the direction of making the lives of those with physical disabilities a little easier and better!

And thanks for stopping by,
