The All-Inclusive Family Vacation

Palm trees in Florida

It’s that time of year when winter is dragging on and we dream of heading south.  A tropical all-inclusive paradise would be nice – just pack the bags and go.  For some of us though, “all-inclusive” means something different when there are special needs to be arranged.  Where do you dream of going on a family vacation?

When it comes to accessibility and accommodations, Disney World in Orlando, Florida, appeals to all ages and all abilities. No wonder their slogan is, “the happiest place on Earth”.  Aside from the obvious thrills of  Magic Kingdom, Disney Studios, EPCOT Centre, and Animal Kingdom, the theme park strives to make the Disney experience barrier-free and inclusive for all.

Disney offers a Disability Access Service pass and neighbouring Universal Studios has an Attraction Assistance Pass.  These cards enable you to bypass the line-ups for a ride.  You’ll be assigned a time to come back through the fast lane, which is great for people who have trouble waiting in a crowded queue.  Some conditions do apply so check with the park.  Wheelchairs and strollers are available at both attractions, as well both parks provide quiet zones to take a break.

Resorts at Disney and Universal offer accessible shuttle service to their theme parks.  If you’re driving there, the parking lots have plenty of spaces for disabled visitors on a first-come basis (and yes, your Ontario disabled parking permit is valid in Florida).  As you enter the parks, you must go through security checks: one area for people entering with bags and purses, and another if you’re not carrying anything.  Hint: Have one person from your family go through the bag check; the others can pass through security and meet you on the fun side.

With so much to see and do, remember to pace yourself.  The key to enjoying your family vacation is not to over-plan your days. There will be rainy days, there may be meltdowns, but think about your friends back home stuck in traffic or bracing for another blizzard; that should remind you that you’re in the happiest place on Earth!  Enjoy!

Wheelchair in Motion’s accessible transportation rentals are available daily, for weekends and more.  With van rentals available in the Greater Toronto Area and most areas of Ontario including Ottawa, we are here to assist with your accessible transportation needs.  Contact us if you have any questions about accessible transportation van rentals.
